                            Updates and Announcements

This week ends the first nine weeks.

Our first Planning Day is this Friday and grades will continue to be added until about this Monday. For this reason a third and final progress report will go home after all grades have been averaged.  Scholarship warnings have been sent out also.  Scholarship warning means your child’s grade is below average or your child‘s behavior needs to be discussed with the teacher.  I feel this first nine weeks has been a good adjustment period to fourth grade.

Your child has several math. logins for various websites: www.ixl.comhttps://www.learni-ready.comwww.pearsonsuccessnet.com  accelerated reader and  their computer logins.  Cool math 4 kids also have a multiplication game called crazy taxi that would be fun and beneficial for the children to practice their multiplication facts on.   In order to show a gain on math F.C.A.T. your child must know their multiplication facts.  We have to do so many strategies in math that involve math facts being memorized: multiplication, division, fractions being simplified and making equivalent fractions, and finding the rule in algebraic equations. Some of the children have the multiplication facts memorized.  Your child is at a disadvantage if they don’t know these facts.  Please spend ten minutes a day on these facts. The Dollar Tree has flash cards for one dollar. Once these facts have been memorized your child can enjoy this investment for the rest of their lives.

All of the children should have read at least six books by now.  The children that read for at least an hour a day usually score at the 90% on any standardized test.  Please encourage your child to read.   Find books that will spark your child’s interest.

November 25 and 26 is the date our first field trip.  Permission slips are going out today.  A good way to make memories with your child is to go on a field trip with them. If you are going to be chaperone you must go through a background check by Duval county Public Schools.  Please note the small writing on the bottom of the permission slips for more detail. Chaperones are not to bring younger sibling on field trips as this is defeating the purpose of your going to help out the teacher with the children.

Mrs. North has been coming in to run the classroom store.  Thanks Mrs. North for doing a wonderful job.  Noah Bartok’s mom set up our booths for the howls and haystacks and decorated Mr. Prater’s door for red ribbon week. Thanks to Noah’s mom for all the thing you do.

Mrs. Wingate is the PTA president and she spearheaded the whole Fall Carnival. We enjoyed the best Howls and Haystacks ever.  I think this event was well attended.  Thank you Mrs. Wingate for doing such a wonderful job on such a tremendous project.  PTA dues are only $5.00 a family.

There is no school on Friday.

Progress Reports went out Friday two weeks ago.  We will send two other progress reports before the first report cards come home.

Homework is assigned every night Monday- Thursday.  Late papers are not accepted unless absenteeism is the reason.  Some of the children are not doing homework at all.  Homework is always associated with the FCAT in math.  Children that score well on the FCAT always do their homework.  Children that read for an hour a day usually score a five on the FCAT. Usually good readers are good writers.
February 26, 2014 all fourth graders will take the writing test.
Mr. Prater assigns writing homework nightly to help the children get writing stamina. Please talk to your child about being the best citizen they can be in school as we have to select patrols this spring.
